This year’s Wimbledon was full of surprises. One of the biggest upsets this year was qualifier German-Jamaican Dustin Brown knocking out former champion Rafael Nadal from the tournament. His first time playing on centre court, on the 40th anniversary of Arthur Ashe’s historic win at Wimbledon in 1975, Brown gave spectators a treat as he swept to victory in his own unique style.
Unfortunately his Wimbledon journey was ended 2 days later by Serbia’s Viktor Troicki, being beaten 6-4, 7-6, 4-6, 6-3.
1. Dustin Brown is 30 years old
He was born on December 8, 1984 in Celle, West Germany.
2. He is of German Jamaican parentage
His father, Leroy, is Jamaican and his Mother, Inge, is from Germany
3. He moved to Jamaica in 1996
When he was 11 years old, in 1996, he and his parents emigrated to Montego Bay, Jamaica.
4. He turned pro in 2002
and made his debut for Jamaica in a match against Bolivia in 2003.
5. Returned to Germany in 2004
In 2004 the 20-year old player moved back to Germany with his parents, who bought him a camper van to travel to European tournaments.
6. Became a German Citizen
In 2010 he changed nationality from Jamaican to German in order to further his tennis career.
7. Is a Fan of Body Art
The 6ft 5 athlete is nicknamed ‘Dreddy’ because of his dreadlocked hair which he hasn’t cut for 19 years. He is also a fan of body art including a tongue piercing and the large tattoo is his side is of his father, Leroy.
8. He now has a 2-0 record against Nadal.
He has beaten Nadal before playing on grass in Halle in 2014
9. He currently has no coach!
10. He won £77,000 in prize money from his Wimbledon performance
