‘Post Colonial’ A Celebration of 50 fabulous Jamaican stamps
Marking Jamaica’s 50th Anniversary of Independence
Rare stamp and collectibles dealer in association with JA50 and award-winning African-Caribbean designer collaborate to celebrate stamps from Jamaica’s philatelic history as part of Black History Month UK.
In celebration of Black History Month UK, rare stamp and collectibles dealer Stanley Gibbons will be hosting an exhibition of 50 fabulous Jamaican stamps curated by award-winning British-born designer of African-Caribbean heritage, Jon Daniel.
‘Post Colonial’ A celebration of 50 fabulous Jamaican stamps will be a month long, dynamic and engaging display of fifty select stamps taken from Jamaica’s philatelic heritage and in celebration of the Caribbean island’s historic 50th anniversary of Independence.
The expert team at Stanley Gibbons to supplement stamps drawn from Jon’s personal collection has sourced rare and valuable stamps. The exhibition is comprised of a main feature panel where the selected 50 stamps are laid out in the shape of Jamaica, and accompanied by 4 other smaller panels that highlight key stamps chosen for their historical importance, colourful history, subject matter, special features and aesthetic qualities. The display will also be complemented by an original portrait artwork comprised entirely of stamps of Jamaican pop icon, Grace Jones by artist Peter Mason.
“Due to their small scale and everyday functionality the design quality of stamps is easily overlooked. We are delighted to be working with Jon again to highlight some world class design, through selected pieces from Jamaica’s philatelic heritage during the 50th year of the country’s independence.” said Stanley Gibbons’ spokesperson, Louise Reynolds.
Jon Daniel commented, “I am thrilled to be working with Stanley Gibbons for the second year running to create an engaging exhibition that has strong design principles at its heart. Yet again Stanley Gibbons have demonstrated true foresight and market leadership by supporting innovative cultural initiatives that reflect the dynamism of our society and push the boundaries of philately beyond its traditional audiences”.
