State of emergency – Dance Tour

Renowned company State of Emergency are back by popular demand with their phenomenally successful Mission programme. Brand new tour Mission Re-Position, co-comissioned by East London Dance, Swindon Dance and Pegasus Theatre Oxford, brandishes four women at the cutting edge of Black British choreography.

Each distinct new work expresses the womens diverse cultural heritage and each piece draws on different aspects of the lives of women for its theme. What results is an explosion of talent that fuses styles such as contemporary, jazz, street and Brazilian dance and martial art.

‘Woman’ by Zez Kolstad looks at the role of women; the dance piece explores and challenges preconceptions and stereotypes.

Menelva Harrys Nature V Nurture takes the stories of families who moved over to England in the 1970s from the Caribbean as the starting point, showing the impact that had on a generation of people who sacrificed their home for what they hoped would be a better life. Jeanefer Jean-Charless Rosa Moments is fluid, energetic dance theatre, using the edginess of Street Dance and the musicality of Jazz Dance. It is a punchy, non narrative abstract piece taking as inspiration the seminal moment on December 1st, 1955 when a lone woman refused to give up her seat on the bus- the moment that started the American Civil Rights Movement.

Finally Louise Kateregas personal piece takes audiences on a journey. Between The Stones and The Stars is essentially an abstracted re-telling of the story so far in Louises personal quest for identity as a woman of dual European and African heritage born in Britain at the crossroads of the 20th and 21st centuries.

Menelva Harry, Jeanefer Jean-Charles, Louise Katerega and Zez Kolstad bring a wealth of experience to the stage, working with companies like Bullies Ballerinas, ACE, RJC Dance Theatre, Foot in Hand, Gelede Dance, and the Royal Opera House.

Working with the four choreographers are dancers Kate Mason, Marcia Edwards, Darrell Aldridge, Kate Zamira Mummery, Amanda Lewis and Graham Adey. All of them bring a broad range of experience having worked with companies that include – Pivotal Dance, Topiary Dance Company, Motionhouse, RJC, ACE Music and Dance, Tavaziva, Rambert, Random and CandoCo.

Mission Re-Position offers something for every palate bringing audiences of all ages an evening of inspirational, breath taking, high quality dance entertainment.
