All Is Go JSA/SCA MAKKA PRO 2014
With just under a month to go, preparations for the Jamaica Surfing Association (JSA)/Southaven Citizens Association (SCA) 2014 MAKKA PRO are "all on track" says JSA President Billy Wilmot. "Despite tight funding, things are looking bright with enquiries coming in from top pros from as far away as the US east coast. Surfers from Barbados and Trinidad are already confirming their participation. We have secured J$6000,000.00 for the prize purse and are still seeking sponsorship support to boost that figure. As the contest purse increases, more top surfers are attracted and the event gains prestige so we want to get the purse to J$1,000,000.00.
The event, which takes place at the Makka surfing beach in the community of Southaven, near Yallahs in Saint Thomas will see 2 days of competitive surfing in three divisions, open men, open women and juniors. With a US$75.00 entry fee in the open divisions and US$50.00 in the juniors and women’s divisions, cash prize payouts will go to the top 8 finishers in the open and junior divisions and the four finalists in the women’s division.
"The standard of surfing by the local surfing community has improved remarkably over the past five years…" continued Mr. Wilmot, "It will be very interesting to see how many surfers from the region will want to take on the formidable competition provided by the Wilmot brothers, Shane Simmonds, Ackeam Phillips, Luke Williams and Michael Panton in the open division, Elishama Beckford, Garren Pryce and Ivah Wilmot in the juniors and Elim Beckford and Imani Wilmot in the women’s division."
There will be lots of other activities during the week leading up to the contest including beach bonfire, heritage tour, culinary festival and nightly beach parties. On the two days of competition, Saturday 26th and Sunday 27th July, there will be activities and rides for the children, music, concession stalls providing food and refreshments and a live stage show for the finale on Sunday night. The event has been endorsed and sponsored as usual by the Jamaica Tourist Board (JTB).
