St Kitts Travel Guide
Situated between Montserrat and St. Eustatius in the northern part of the Leeward Islands, St Kitts is a wonderful holiday destination for those who want to get away and truly relax. Some people will find the island too relaxed, others will revel in the quiet leisurely feeling on this naturally beautiful island.
The capital Basseterre, is a picturesque colonial harbour town, and well worth a visit. Taking the Scenic Railway, which runs along on the old tracks originally built to transport sugarcane, is a great way to see the sites on a trip right around the island. The beaches are mostly black sand due to the volcanic past, however there are a few white sand beaches with crystal blue water.
Nature lovers can take a visit to the historic Romney Manor set in nine acres of tropical gardens, explore the volcanic crater, or go hiking in the rainforest.
Diving is ideal for both wreck and reef divers who are looking to explore at Monkey Shoals, Coconut Tree Reef, Nags Head and Sandy Point. Snorkelling, jet skiing, parasailing and windsurfing, horse riding and jeep safaris are also available on the island.
There is accommodation to suit all budgets tucked away in the hills on beachfront, from simple guesthouses to luxury stays in plantation and modern complexes. The best way to get around the island is to rent a car, but the are bus services also. Travelling to neighbouring Nevis is easy by local ferry which runs most days, or by plane.
