About Bahamas Junkanoo
Junkanoo is a national festival in the Bahamas, and the islands unique way of seeing in the New Year, and a great chance to experience Bahamian Culture. Most of the major Bahamian islands celebrate Junkanoo, but the largest and most popular parades take place in downtown Nassau, New Providence, where revelers ‘rush’ the areas of Bay Street and Shirley Street. The parade is a visual feast of costumes, masqueraders and musicians.
Among the Junkanoo troupes are the well known ‘Roots’ ‘Saxons’ and ‘Valley Boys’. Competition is fierce, with prize money to be won. Anyone can watch the parade, but if you want a seat you should buy a ticket. Junkanoo tickets go on sale a few weeks before the parade and can be purchased online.
Junkanoo parades are held twice per year, including Independence Day on July 10. There is even a museum highlighting Junkanoo culture, showcasing costumes, art and artifacts in downtown Nassau.
