The World Youth Netball Championships has welcomed the biggest crowds ever for a Netball event in Scotland.
Over 6000 spectators and over 200 team delegates from far and wide have come through the doors of the Emirates Arena to support the 20 teams taking part in the Championships over the last six days.
The Opening Night saw a record breaking 3000 strong support come along to cheer on the home nation to a 72 – 21 defeat of the Cayman Islands. Tonight (Tuesday 27th August) sees the preliminary rounds come to an end with the final positioning rounds starting tomorrow (Wednesday 28th August) Scotland came fourth in their pool and will be competing for a placing between 9th and 16th with their first positioning decider against Northern Ireland tomorrow afternoon.

Chair of Glasgow Life and the Executive Member of the Commonwealth Games, Councillor Archie Graham, said: “The record numbers we’ve welcomed through the door at the World Youth Netball Championships has been fantastic. I am delighted the people of Glasgow have come along to support the teams. I hope they continue to do so over the coming days when the competition will hot up as we go into the final positioning rounds. We have been blown away by the talent, dedication and enthusiasm of these young players.”
The 7th World Youth Netball Championships feature some of the best young netball players from across the world. Host nation Scotland are battling it out against 19 other countries, from as far afield as Singapore and Samoa, in a bid to be crowned the best in the world at under-21 level. Among the nations competing are netball giants New Zealand, England and Australia.
The 10-day event, which is part of UK Sport’s £27million Gold Event Series, is the first world netball event to be staged in Scotland since 1987 and will take place less than a year before the sport takes centre stage at the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games. Organisers are hoping to build on the success of the recent World Premier Club Challenge competition at the Emirates Arena, which was attended by around 2,500 netball fans.
The selected Scottish under 21 Squad is: Beverly Campbell, Gillian Crozier, Lynsey Gallagher, Laura Gibson, Emily Gray, Emma Hardie, Sarah Kerr, Shaunagh McCuaig, Nicola McCleery, Erin McQuarie, Jo Pettitt and Bethany Sunderland.
The competing countries are: Australia, Barbados, Bermuda, Cayman Islands, England, Fiji, Israel, Jamaica, Malta, Namibia, New Zealand, Northern Ireland, Papau New Guinea, Republic of Ireland, Samoa, Scotland, Singapore, South Africa, Trinidad and Tobago and Wales.
