In 1502 Christopher Columbus sights St Lucia.
1651
1651 French arrive in St Lucia.
1746
French establish the first official settlement in St. Lucia – Soufrière.
1765
The first plantation was started by two Frenchmen.
1778
The Battle of Cul de Sac.
1494
1794 – 1798 ‘The Second Carib War’ in the Eastern Caribbean, Windward Islands
1802
1802 St Lucia ceded to the British.
1842
English becomes the island’s official language.
1882
1882 Indentured Indian labourers arrive.
1951
Suffrage granted to all citizens over age twenty-one.
1979
1979 St Lucia becomes fully independent.
